The PhotoNews' top ten highlights from the 2013 IHSA state track & field meet

May 20, 2013 - This past weekend, we spent three days at O’Brien Field covering girls’ state track. With more than 80 track and field programs to watch, we created a list, in no particular order, we think were the top ten highlights from the 41st year of the state championship program run by the Illinois High School Association. There were some incredible performances, moments and athletes at this year’s meet. Here are our top ten memories below.

Golden Perfection

Sprinter Aaliyah Brown enjoyed a perfect state final Saturday. With her impressive burst of speed, the Lincoln-Way East’s senior won four state championship medals in 3A representing the Griffins. A four-time state-qualifier, Brown won her fourth state medal in the 100-meter dash. She was just one hundredth of second off the state record time by held by Waubonsie Valley’s Morolake Akinosun (2012, finals) and Morgan Park’s Alexandria Anderson at 11.41. The Texas A&M bound sprinter was also a member of the 100 and 200-meter relay squads that also placed first in the large school division.

Unity’s Bailey Reifsteck hits her neck and shoulders on the padding after her pole snapped during a pole vault attempt at the 2012 IHSA state meet on Saturday. Reifsteck medaled in 8th place with her best attempt at 10’ 03”.

May 11, 2013 - Charleston, IL - It was a perfect weekend of badminton for Lyons Township High School sophomore Stephanie Lin. After six consecutive singles victories, the #6 seed was crowned state champion at the 2013 IHSA state badminton finals on Saturday afternoon. The win was not only an exciting achievement for Lin, but a first for the Lion’s badminton program as well. Lin became the first player to win a state medal in the program’s participation in the sport.

HApril 6, 2013 - Monticello, IL - Over 220 half marathoners gathered just outside of Monticello, IL, on April 6 to compete in the inaugural Allerton Trail race on a beautiful spring morning.

Mingled in with 10K runners at the starting line, their race would take them through winding trails on the 1,517 picturesque acres of Robert Allerton Park. Up steep hills, around statues and through the various gardens of the grand estate billed as one of the Seven Wonders of Illinois by the Illinois Bureau of Tourism, runners from as far away as Winnebago, IL and Perrysville, IN.

Zwagerman Wins Womens' Title At 5K

Jenny Zwagerman was the top overall female competitor stopping the clock at 20:52.5 and finished eighth overall at the 2013 April Fools 5K. Her time was three minutes and three seconds faster than the time turned in by last year’s top female competitor Shannon Pappas.

Friends tweet star to meet classmate

Friends and students of Murelle Plotner have a special request for Justin Bieber. They, as well as people who have never met her, are tweeting like crazy to encourage him to meet their friend now recovering from a bone marrow transplant earlier this month in St. Louis.

Tuesday, friends started posting on twitter using the hashtag #JustinMeetMurelle hoping the pop superstar will take the time to stop by and visit Plotner as she recovers. As the day wore on, the hashtag went viral as even prominent college and international athletes tweeted the request.
